(This is from a social media message I posted August 20, 2023.)
Why do I work in a library?
Because everyday, in some small way, I make a positive difference in someone’s life.
Today at the end of the day, first-time parents came in with their absolutely adorable 10-month old baby to get library cards. As I registered them, I chatted away about our programs and services, particularly the ones geared to parents, all the while cooing and making silly faces at their baby. Did I mention how cute he was?! Even he got a card on which I put a special sticker, just for him.
Afterwards, they asked if I would mind being in a selfie photo to remember their son’s first library card, promising that it wouldn’t be posted anywhere, it was just for them.
Of course, I agreed. How could I not? It was the first time I’ve ever been asked that, and I was so touched. It was a special moment for them and I was humbled to be included.
Libraries are a lifeline for so many — parents, seniors, newcomers to Canada, just to name a few. Not only are libraries part of a community, they also help build community. I find the small part I play in connecting people to the resources they need and the wider community to be deeply gratifying and rewarding.
